especially of the Brahmans). Also to be noticed are the two
sections of the vanamāla, the garland of flowers, resting on
the upper arms.
At the sides of the small temple there are two standing figu-
res, of which only an arm, the left one and the right one
respectively, raised at the level of a circular element, is extant.
The small temple jutted out on the lower side of the stele,
and the jutting part that was visible is decorated with a band
featuring lozenges. A rectangular cavity can be observed at
the top back side of the fragment.
This is one of those miniature replicas of temples that complete,
at the centre and at the sides, the upper part of Northern India
medieval steles. To better understand their position, see for
example the stele fromDelhi dated 1147, published by Härtel,
Auboyer (1971: no. 88).

ghirlanda di fiori, che passa sulle braccia superiori.
Sulle parti laterali del tempietto si osservano due figure
stanti, di cui rimangono soltanto il braccio, rispettivamente,
sinistro e destro, alzati in corrispondenza di un elemento
circolare.
Il tempietto aggettava sulla parte inferiore della stele, e la
parte aggettante che rimaneva visibile è decorata con una
fascia a losanghe. Sul retro del frammento si osserva, in
alto, un incasso rettangolare.
Si tratta di una di quelle riproduzioni di tempietti che
completano, al centro e ai lati, la parte sommitale delle stele
medievali dell’India settentrionale. Per capirne la posizione,
si veda a mo’ di esempio la tarda stele proveniente da Delhi
datata 1147, pubblicata da Härtel, Auboyer (1971: n. 88).
