Horizontal stele (MO177)
Egypt; 26 jumādà al-uḫrà 204 (18 December 819).

The stele has the shape of an irregular rectangle and shows
some damages on the right side and at the bottom, on the
left. The epitaph is distributed over eight lines and is
enclosed within an engraved rectangular frame, formed by
a S-shaped motif. The inscription is also engraved in a thin,
shallow trait and is executed in Kufic with triangular,
bilobed, trilobed, and vegetal apexes, with no vowels, nor
diacritical and orthographic marks.

possessed of knowledge upholding justice;
3 there is no god but He, the All-mighty, the All-wise*

5 is the messenger of God. This is the tomb of Abī’l-
Ḥusayn Muḥammad b. Zaḥlaq (or Zaḥlaf)
6 b. Ibrahīm b. Muḥammad b. Sallām b. Abī’l-Sallām al-
Qurašī.
7 He died on Thursday three (days) before (the end of)
jumādà al-u
8 ḫra of the year four and two hundred (26 jumādà al-uḫrà
204/18 December 819).11 May God bless Muḥammad!

La stele ha la forma di un rettangolo irregolare e presenta
rotture nella parte inferiore sinistra e laterale destra.
L’epitaffio si sviluppa su otto righi ed è racchiuso entro una
cornice rettangolare incisa, formata da una treccia a due
capi. La scrittura è ugualmente incisa con tratto sottile e
poco profondo ed è eseguita in cufico con apici triangolari,
bilobati, trilobati e vegetali, privo di punti diacritici, vocali
e segni ortografici.
