Horizontal stele (MO179)

The stele is of rectangular shape and is broken into two parts,
perfectly matched and reassembled; the lower left corner is
missing. The epitaph is distributed over ten lines and is
enclosed within a frame carved in bas-relief, formed, on the
top and on the right and left sides, by an uninterrupted
sequence of trilobed half-palmettes; the lower side of the
frame follows the silhouette of the letters and is undecorated.
The writing is executed in low relief, in Kufic with large
triangular apexes and some vegetal elements (on the first
line), with no vowels, nor diacritical and orthographic marks.

There is no god but Allah!

3 that there is no god but Allāh, the One, there is no
partner with him *The Living God
4 the Undying* (part of Kor. 25:58) *and He has not taken
to Him a son, and He has no associate
5 in the Kingdom* (part of Kor. 25:2) *nor is there any
god with Him; for then
6 each god would have taken off that he created and some
of them would have risen up over others; glory to be
God
7 beyond that they describe, who has knowledge of the
Unseen and the Visible; high exalted be He, above
8 that they associate!* (part of Kor. 23:91-92). (He
testifies) that Muḥammad is His sevant and His
messenger. May God bless him
9 and give him peace! He died in ḏī’l-ḥijja in the year
10 five and forty and two hundred (ḏū’l-ḥijja 245/February-
March 860). May God be pleased with him!

La stele è rettangolare; è rotta in due parti – perfettamente
combacianti e ricomposte – e manca dell’angolo inferiore
sinistro. L’epitaffio si distribuisce su dieci righi ed è racchiuso
in una cornice scolpita in bassorilievo, formata, sui lati
superiore, destro e sinistro, da una sequenza continua di
semipalmette trilobate; sul lato inferiore la cornice segue
invece il profilo delle lettere ed è priva di decorazione. Scrittura
eseguita in leggero rilievo, in cufico con ampi apici triangolari
e alcuni elementi vegetali (sul primo rigo), privo di punti
diacritici, vocali e segni ortografici.

dio accanto a sé, altrimenti
6 ogni dio si porterebbe via per sé quel che ha creato e gli
uni sopraffarebbero gli altri. Sia gloria a Dio,
7 ben diverso è Lui da quel che costoro raccontano.
Conoscitore del palese e dell’occulto, ben più alto e
sublime degli esseri
8 che Gli associano* (parte di Cor. XXIII,91-92). (Ha
testimoniato) che Muḥammad è il Suo servitore e il Suo
profeta. Che Dio lo benedica
9 e gli dia eterna salute! È morto nel (mese di) ḏī’l-ḥijja
dell’anno
10 cinque e quaranta e duecento (ḏū’l-ḥijja 245/febbraio-
marzo 860). Che Dio sia soddisfatto di lui!
