Vertical stele (MO183)
Egypt; rabī‘ al-aḫir 259 (February-March 873).

Rectangular stele with a slight fracture in the lower right
corner. The epitaph is distributed over fifteen lines and is
enclosed on all four sides within a frame in relief that in
some points follows the outline of the letters. The writing is
carved in relief, in Kufic with wide triangular apexes and
occasional vegetal elements, with no vowels, nor diacritical
and orthographic marks. Two long horizontal appendices to
the third and fourth line.
1 In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
2 Praise be to God who only possesses eternity,
3 who has imposed caducity on his creatures
4 who has established eternity for himself and
5 has reserved it for himself cutting his creatures out of it
6 has prescribed death for his servants. This
7 is what has testified Dāwd b.
8 Ya‘qūb. He testifies that there is no God but
9 Allāh, the One, there is no partner
10 with him, and that Muḥammad is His servant and
11 His messenger. May God bless him
12 and give him peace together with the family of his
House, ge
13 nerous and of great distinction. He died in
14 rabī‘ al-aḫir of the year nine
15 and fifty and two hundred (rabī‘ al-aḫir 259/February-
March 873).

Stele rettangolare con una lieve frattura nell’angolo
inferiore destro. L’epitaffio è suddiviso su quindici righi ed
è racchiuso sui quattro lati entro una cornice in rilievo che
segue, in alcuni punti, il profilo delle lettere. Scrittura
scolpita in rilievo, in cufico con ampi apici triangolari e
sporadici elementi vegetali, privo di punti diacritici, vocali
e segni ortografici. Due lunghe appendici orizzontali al
terzo e quarto rigo.

3 che ha imposto alle sue creature la caducità
4 che ha stabilito per sé l’eternità e
5 se l’è riservata escludendone le sue creature e
6 ha prescritto la morte per i suoi servitori. Que
7 sto è ciò che testimonia Dāwd b.
8 Ya‘qūb. Egli testimonia che non vi è Dio ol
9 tre Allāh, l’Unico, nessuno Gli è pa
10 ri e che Muḥammad è il Suo servitore e
11 il Suo profeta. Che Dio lo benedica
12 e gli dia eterna salute insieme con la gente della sua
casa, ma
13 gnanima e distinta. È morto nel (mese di)
14 rabī‘ al-aḫir dell’anno nove
15 e cinquanta e duecento (rabī‘ al-aḫir 259/febbraio-
marzo 873).
