Vertical stele (MO182)

The stele has the shape of a regular rectangle. The epitaph,
distributed over sixteen lines, is enclosed on four sides by
an undecorated frame in relief. On the left and lower sides
the frame follows the outline of some appendices of the
letters. Writing is carved in relief, in Kufic with large
triangular apexes, without vowels, nor diacritical and
orthographic marks.

2 *God bears fitness that there is no god
3 but He, and the angels, and men
4 possessed of knowledge upholding justice; there is no
5 god but He, the All-mighty, the All-wise* (Kor. 3:18).

7 mawlà Muḥammad b. al-‘Abbās.
8 And he testifies that there is no God but Allāh,
9 the One, there is no partner with him, and that
10 Muḥammad is His servant and His messenger – may
God bless him
11 and give him peace! –, and that the death
12 and resurrection are truth, and that the paradise and the fire
13 are truth and that *God shall raise up whosoever is within
the tombs* (part of Kor. 22:7).13 In this (belief) he has lived,
14 and in it he has died, and in it he will be raised up living,
if God pleases!
15 May God be pleased with him!

La stele ha la forma di un rettangolo regolare. L’epitaffio,
distribuito su sedici righi, è racchiuso sui quattro lati entro
una cornice in rilievo, priva di decorazione. Sui lati sinistro
e inferiore la cornice segue il profilo di alcune appendici
delle lettere. Scrittura scolpita in rilievo, in cufico con ampi
apici triangolari, privo di punti diacritici, vocali e segni
ortografici.

11 e gli dia eterna salute! –, che la morte
12 e la resurrezione sono verità, che il paradiso e il fuoco
13 sono verità e che *Dio resusciterà a vita gli abitatori dei
sepolcri* (parte di Cor. XXII,7).13 E (attestando) ciò egli
visse,
14 morì e resusciterà vivo, se lo vuole
15 Dio! Che Dio sia soddisfatto di lui!
